Never too old for Halloween

October 17, 2011 - Kristy MacKaben
Be honest. Is this going too far for the sake of Halloween? Julie and Johnny are dressing as bride and groom for Halloween. We won't have to buy a thing because they will wear the outfits they wore as flower girl and ring bearer for Scott's brother Todd's wedding. Those are fine Halloween costumes. My question is, would it be over the top if I dressed up as a bride for a Halloween party that Julie can't attend because she'll be in school? I was seriously considering breaking out my wedding gown and wearing it, with Johnny as my groom...just to be funny. Scott thinks it might be a tad creepy for a mom to dress up as her son's bride. I just think it would be pretty hilarious, but maybe not so much, if you don't know me very well. I'm a Halloween lover. I have always loved to dress up in off-the-wall costumes. Scouring thrift shops, dollar stores and our house for odds and ends for homemade Halloween costumes is fun to me. When we were growing up, my sister and I would not be caught dead in one of those cheap, straight-out-of-the-bag plastic costumes. (You know---the kind with the plastic mask with the elastic strap.) For a few years, my mom had a friend hand-make our costumes, and they were pretty awesome. Gizmo and Kermit the Frog were two of my personal favorites. Even in my high school college and after college years, I loved to dress up in fun do-it-yourself costumes. One year, my friend and I used garbage bags, purple sparkly hats and purple gloves to dress up like California Raisins. Another year, I made a pretty cute Super Woman costume complete with super high red boots from Goodwill. Scott has also joined in the Halloween fun for quite a few years. One year he was the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Another year we were both Smurfs (way before Smurfs became popular again), and a couple years ago we dressed up as Hungry Hungry Hippos. Last year I dressed up as Miss Piggy and Johnny was my little Kermit. (That was so fun!) So, this year I don't have much of a plan since I can't think of how to tag along with my little bride and groom. Maybe I could be the tacky bridesmaid?? Or, maybe..just maybe I should sit this one out. What do you think?
