What do you call your children's body parts?

November 14, 2011 - Kristy MacKaben
Julie is 6 and she still calls her parts "hiney." Both front and back. I guess I'm a wimp when it comes to disclosing the correct names of my children's body parts. I just never saw a need to talk about that, and I always feared my kid would shout "vagina" in the middle of the grocery store. But, that's all irrelevant now. After reading the horrid details of the Jerry Sandusky case at PSU, and other terrible child molestation cases I have changed my mind. There is a story in the Life section today about child molestation. For that story, I interviewed a 19-year-old girl named Lyndzi who was raped repeatedly by her biological father. It is a terrible story of abuse, but this girl is completely amazing and has gone on to live a normal life, albeit with flashbacks and horrible memories. Talking with experts for the story, one of the things they mentioned is the importance of parents to talk with their kids about inappropriate touch and to be open with kids about private parts. The biggest mistake parents make, they said, is feeling too safe or too comfortable. "This would never happen to my kid," is not necessarily something we say out loud as parents, but it's definitely something we think. My children are still little and pretty much under my watch most of the time, but I think this story is a reality check. I don't think there's a way we, as parents can protect our children too much. According to statistics 1 out of 4 girls and 1 out of 7 boys are sexually assaulted by the time they are 16. That number is unbelievable. Though the conversation will be uncomfortable, I'm definitely going to open up to Julie, and maybe even start telling Johnny the correct names for body parts. What do you think about everything that has happened? Does it change the way you think? Do you label your children's body parts correctly? Take the poll below.
