The first curse (kind of)

November 15, 2011 - Kristy MacKaben
It's all fun and games until your kid says a bad word for the first time. I was lucky enough to be in another state this weekend when Julie yelled "Dammit!!" when she screwed up a picture she was coloring. I'm not the world's best mom and I often say (or scream) things I shouldn't, but I really don't think I say that word. I admit that I may have uttered some unpleasant phrases during the Ravens/Steelers game the other weekend. (Sorry. I'm a Ravens fan. You can stop reading if you'd like.) But, I really think the kids were sound asleep at that point. I really can't blame Scott either. He rarely raises his voice, let alone says anything like "Dammit", even when his beloved 49ers are losing. So, the conundrum is where did she hear that word and what do to do about it. I was away this weekend with some college girlfriends, so Scott was on duty when the word was uttered. The thing is Julie literally had no idea it was a bad word. Scott went easy on her and just explained that she shouldn't say that word, which apparently caused a flood of tears. He's such a softie when it comes to Julie so that night somehow ended with ice cream sundaes. Oh well. I'm pretty sure she won't say that word again anytime soon. I'm just dreading the day worse words come out of her mouth, or when she actually says those words on purpose.
