They better realize: Santa Claus is coming to town...

December 2, 2011 - Kristy MacKaben
As Christmas approaches, for some reason our kids seem to act especially obnoxious. It's as if they're giving us the green light to not go overboard with presents. Who would want to reward that kind of behavior? There have been a couple especially bratty instances lately. Example #1: Last Saturday we took the kids shopping for fun Christmas decorations at Walmart. Granted, Walmart is not exactly fun, but we thought it would be kind of exciting to pick out cool Christmas lights and decorations. We also had to pick out birthday presents for Julie's good friend. While in the toy aisles, Julie kept whining for toys like a toddler. Obviously we kept saying no until she pouted and said with tears in her eyes, "You only make me happy when you buy me toys!" I almost threw up in my mouth. That was hands-down the brattiest thing I've ever heard her say. I could just imagine the tsking of the other moms in the aisle. Ugh! Needless to say, that shopping trip was not so fun. Example #2: It was Johnny's turn to act out last night. Scott and I took the kids to Bill Sell's Bold for dinner, and then watched the Christmas parade in downtown Altoona, which was followed by the tree lighting and fireworks. The kids jumped and danced to the music, gobbled countless candies and clapped excitedly for the fireworks. It was a great night. As we were walking back to the car, Johnny spotted the light up flashlight toys for sale. "I want one!" he screamed excitedly. Scott told him no because there was no need for a flashy toy after the parade was over. Well, that was it. He screamed, flailed and punched Scott in the face 20-some times. We understand he's 2 and that's what 2-year-olds do, but that behavior really tests a parent's patience. I think we just need to start playing the song "Santa Claus is coming to Town" a little more often. "They better watch out. They better not cry. They better not pout. I'm telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town."
