The Mysterious Christmas Angel

December 22, 2011 - Kristy MacKaben
Elf on the Shelf is all the rage. The stuffed elves magically appear in houses and move each night around the house. Do you have one in your house? We don't have one, though it's not because I don't love the idea. Before Elf on the Shelf became over-the-top popular, we had the Christmas Angel in our house. Christmas Angel evolved from a stuffed angel I had when I was little. She has a little pocket on her dress, and on Christmas morning there was always a little treat in her pocket. When Julie was about 2, I started the Christmas Angel tradition, and Julie has fallen in love with the old stuffed Angel and the magic she brings around Christmas time. She usually appears about 12 days before Christmas with a little note or card in her pocket addressed to Julie (and this year Johnny was included in the fun). Usually, Christmas Angel brings holiday-themed coloring pages, but she ocassionally brings little gifts, ornaments or treats. One of the gifts she brought Julie yesterday was a halo for Julie to wear to school today. The kids were supposed to dress as their "favorite winter holiday" today at school, and Julie was an angel. She wore her flower girl dress, we borrowed wings from church and Christmas Angel provided the finishing touch with the halo. Sometimes I wonder if Christmas Angel is becoming just another hassle to the holiday season and whether it's worth it to create another pretend magical story. But, then I hear Julie scurrying down the stairs each morning, anxious to see Christmas Angel's note or treats, and giggling at where the angel decided to rest for the night. Then, that's when it's all worth it.
