Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

January 16, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
This was the first year Julie really started to understand Martin Luther King Jr., and the reasons he was so important. I have talked to Julie about Martin Luther King since she was probably Johnny's age, but this was the first time I started talking about the truth, the real issues. It wasn't an easy conversation, but I really want to be honest and open about the cruelty and injustice that happened in our country. I checked out a kids book about Martin Luther King Jr., and it was the perfect starter book. In a kid-friendly manner, the book delved into the topics of slavery, civil rights and Jim Crow laws. I tried to explain everything I could, but even I struggled to answer Julie's questions. "Why would people be mean to people just because they had darker skin?" She even seemed to tear up a little throughout the book looking at the pictures of the Woolworth's lunch counter sit-in, and the difference between schools for African American children and white children. "Why did that man kill Martin Luther King?" I'm sure it was a tad disturbing for Julie to learn about such a terrible part of American history. But this is something every kid needs to learn, understand and embrace so nothing like it ever happens again.
