Happy Birthday Dad!

January 29, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
The first and only time I forgot my dad's birthday was my freshman year in college--not a stellar year for me in terms of memory (for various reasons). I think the only reason I remembered my dad's birthday eventually was when I realized it was February and I hadn't wished my dad a "Happy Birthday." (His birthday is Jan. 30.) I didn't send a card or call him on the phone, and that was way before my parents knew how to email. When I did finally call him and apologize profusely for my selfish forgetfulness, my dad was more than devastated. That year was a rough enough on my dad, with his firstborn going off to college, and barely calling or returning home for visits. It was as if I put my parents to the back of my mind. I silently vowed to never forget my dad's birthday again. The thing is--my dad doesn't really want to make a big deal of his birthday. He actually hates admitting he has turned a year older. All he really wants are his kids to come together and to eat some cake and ice cream. So, he got his wish again this year. We headed to Cumberland, enjoyed a special meal of beef strogonaff (dad's choice), followed by double chocolate cake, and presents, even though he insists he doesn't need a thing. We played ping pong, watched "Bridesmaids" (an embarrassingly inappropriate movie to watch with my parents), and enjoyed our time together. Happy Birthday Dad! I promise you'll always be at the top of my list...especially on Jan. 30!
