A, C or +, it's all the same!

February 5, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
Why do our school districts not use As, Bs and Cs like the good old days? Are school officials afraid of hurt feelings or kids being labeled stupid or smart? Report cards are now full of pluses, check marks and minuses for the lower grades and Cs, Ss and Ns for the rest of the elementary schoolers. It doesn't matter what codes are used, kids will figure it out. Just like they know whether they're in the high or low reading groups, and whether they add and subtract better than their friends. It's kind of pointless to not be straightforward with the grades. Kids know where they stand regardless. So, how did your kids do on report cards? We were pleased with Julie's first report card. It's only kindergarten, but it was nice to see mostly pluses (which mean she mastered the skills). But the best was reading the nice comments from Julie's teacher. She is doing "extremely well" in all the subjects, gets along with her classmates and is a "joy to have in class." That's all Scott and I could ask for in her first year. We're proud of our kindergartener!
