Happy Valentine's Day!

February 14, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
There are too many grumpy Valentine's Day naysayers these days. Of course there are the people who have renamed Valentine's Day "Singles Awareness Day." That's kind of funny. I have more of a beef with the people who whine about Valentine's Day being a Hallmark holiday. They claim they are anti-Valentine's because it's just another commercial holiday. It really doesn't have to be that way. What's wrong with a day set aside to tell everyone you love them? Forget the cards, candy and flowers if you're so amped up about spending money for no reason. Just spend time with family, enjoy a nice dinner at home and show them you care. Maybe it's hard for me to relate to the anti-Valentiners because our family makes a big deal about every holiday. Julie was inconsolable when I told her we couldn't have a kids' Valentine's party at our house this year. (Sidenote: We're trying to sell our house, and I just didn't want to deal with the mess and the hassle this year.) So, tonight she was happy when we broke out our Valentine's decorations, I cooked a fancy meal and we treated ourselves to chocolate covered strawberries and banannas. Yes. We played into the commercialization by giving the kids a couple small presents, and Scott bought me a nice tulip arrangement. We just love holidays! The second Julie woke up this morning, Julie kissed Johnny's eyelids and whispered, "Happy Valentine's Day Johnny. I love you." That makes Valentine's Day worth it. Though, I have to admit, when I hugged Julie goodnight, she asked "Can we put up our St. Patrick's Day decorations tomorrow?"
