Sick Day Vacation

February 23, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
As weird as this sounds, I found myself secretly wishing that Julie wasn't quite over her stomach bug this morning. Not that I love for my daughter to run to the toilet every two minutes, but I kind of wanted her to stay home for another sick day today. That is pretty unlike me because usually I relish the relative quiet of school days. For some reason, the last three days Julie has been home sick have been pretty great. It's not like I was happy that she wasn't feeling well, but we actually got to spend some quality time together where we didn't rush or hurry to be anywhere. We played school, did crafts, played games, read books and played hide and seek. It took me back to the days before Julie started preschool, and I would carefully plan out our days with crafts and learning activities like a pyscho first time mom. The past couple days Julie was home sick, I reverted to those days. We learned about Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Lent, and Julie finally seems to be grasping the concept of counting money. She spent at least an hour working on math problems, and read a couple books to Johnny as they cuddled on the big comfy recliner. One afternoon Julie helped me clean the kitchen and living room, and delighted in making the fish tank "sparkle." Including the weekend and the two days off for President's Day, Julie had been off school for six days. Shockingly I wasn't sick of her at all. It made me kind of miss the toddler and preschool years. And, unfortunately, it probably had Julie thinking sick days aren't so bad. oops. That wasn't my intention, but I enjoyed my sick little girl the past few days.
