Thanks Dr. Seuss!

February 27, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
There aren't many things that boost your ego more than reading a book to a bunch of kindergarteners. Especially when you're a new face to the class, those five and six year olds pretty much can't help but adore you. In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday on Friday, parents were invited to read a Dr. Seuss book to children all week at Julie's school. This morning was my opportunity and Julie and I chose the Dr. Seuss favorite "Green Eggs and Ham." Riveted, all eyes on me, Julie and her classmates listened intently to the story. One little girl sitting next to Julie even whispered "Your mom is a really really good reader. She reads so good." I even got an encore. Much to my delight, I read a second Dr. Seuss story "Because the Bug went Ka-choo". The kids loved chiming in with their own "Kachoos" at the appropriate times. The kids impressed me with their reading skills and made me giggle when they blurted out irrelevant facts, such as Julie's "My Meme's name is Mary Lou," in response to the name of the boat "Mary Lou" in the second book. Coincidentally, another little girl then offered up the same information about her grandma named Mary Lou. The end of my story reading session was met with a round of applause and hugs from pretty much every kid in the room. Then, one little boy said "You're really pretty." This of course set off a dozen other "Yeah. You are really pretty," followed by another flurry of hugs. How completely wonderful to be treated like a celebrity for a good 15 minutes.
