Make new friends

March 20, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
Julie talks nonstop about her three best friends from school. They have nicknames for each other. Julie's is "Rosie". They make up songs and dances together and they constantly talk about how they're best friends forever. And, apparently Julie has been giving away her stuffed animals to her friends at school. (She has so many I didn't even notice.) After spending five years micromanaging Julie's friendships, I find it so strange that she has this little world that I know nothing about. She constantly talks about arranging playdates with these kindergarten buddies, but I have no idea how to do that. I don't know the girls' parents, and teachers aren't allowed to give out phone numbers. As luck would have it we ran into one of these best friends at the park this afternoon. "Hi Emma!" Julie squealed.. I have rarely seen my sometimes socially awkward little girl react so excited about running into a friend. Without hesitation, the girls froliced away and played for over an hour without interruption. When it was time to go, I exchanged numbers with the little girl's mom, with the promise to get together again, and the possibility of a birthday party on the horizon. It was nice to get a quick glimpse into Julie's world.
