What to give a teacher?

May 30, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
A candle is just not going to cut it and a gift card seems too impersonal. What the heck am I going to give Julie's teacher? I mean she spent the entire year taking care of my child and teaching her things I would not even think to teach. The other night Julie spelled the word "debt" out of the blue. Now, don't go thinking that's a word we regularly use aroud the house. Julie remembered the word from a lesson about silent letters and the "et" family of words. When Julie started the year she could sound out very basic words and she recognized a list of sight words. I can't even describe how far she has advanced and how much she has blossomed this year. From adding and subtracting to reading chapter books (almost) by herself. She's friendlier, more confident and not afraid to make friends or talk to adults. I'm sure a lot of this was a natural maturity progression. But, I sure have to give the teacher credit for a lot. So, how can I thank her without being cheesy or going overboard? I'm not saying I need to give a gift she'll cherish forever, but I want to put some thought into it and let her know how much she's appreciated. I have until June 8--so send me some ideas!
