Happy Belated Birthday to me

June 4, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
I'm not sure many women past 30 welcome their birthdays as readily as I do. Really...what milestone are we looking forward to next? Surely not the big 4-0! Friday I turned 34 and I welcomed my birthday with gusto as usual. I'm not saying I love getting older---which I don't. Obviously I would much rather be 24. I just love birthdays. It's the one day that belongs to me and I really give myself license to do whatever I please because well..it's my birthday. Scott jokes that I really have a birthday week since my festivities often start the weekend before. I think I enjoyed four birthday cakes this year and I don't know how many renditions of the Birthday song. I pleaded with the kids to continuously sing the song throughout the day. If they wanted something (drink, food, etc.) they were forced to sing me Happy Birthday first. I told them my birthday wish (well..one of them) was for the kids to be nice to me. It worked! They were pretty much on their best behavior all weekend! And, of course I'm not above being spoiled with presents. Scott bought me a new bike with a seat for Johnny, some books (including Fifty Shades of Grey, which I'll blog about later), and a really cute Vera Bradley wallet.(Have you visited the store near Panera? It's awesome if you love Vera Bradley.) I really am like a little kid when it comes to birthdays. Since Scott was in California this weekend for our niece's high school graduation, I knew I would be alone with the kids. So, I let Julie play hooky on Friday (my birthday) and we headed down to the Baltimore Inner Harbor (one of my favorite places in world, mostly because of the memories). We ate, played and I treated myself to the biggest size possible java chip frappuccino. My parents and a really good high school friend and her daughter met up with us at the new Bubba Gump restaurant and they surprised me with a birthday sundae and an awesome rendition of a birthday song from the waitstaff. Where this might embarrass some people, I'm always like "Bring it on!" I don't mind people knowing it's my birthday. We spent the rest of the weekend at my sister's house near Washington, D.C. Dinner Friday night of course was my favorite meal: crabcakes, corn on the cob and a homemade ice cream cake for dessert. I don't apologize for being spoiled on my birthday, and I really think everyone should approach their birthdays the same way. It's your birthday! Do what you like!
