Last day of kindergarten

June 8, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
How it snuck up on me, I'm not sure. But, here we are the last day of kindergarten for my little girl! With our upcoming move to Chicago, I'm a bit emotional about all our "lasts," but somehow the end of kindergarten struck me particularly hard today. "I'm a first grader!" Julie boasted a few dozen times after school dismissal. "Don't rub it in," I wanted to tell her. Instead, I just smiled and nodded my head in disbelief. How is it possible that I am mother to a first grader? As I looked at her today, I realized she is very much a first grader and has come so far in a year. She reads, writes, and completes math problems I have never tried to teach her. She made friends easily this year and fell in love with her teacher, who seemed just as troubled by the end of the year as I felt. (When I went to drop Julie off this morning, her teacher was bawling because she was sad to leave all the kids who she considered family.) I admit I was a bit nervous in the beginning of the year. I wasn't so sure Julie was ready for a full day of school, considering she still took two hour naps some days. I was worried about her adapting socially and whether she would apply herself and do her best. Scott and I couldn't have asked for a better first year school experience. She learned, developed, made friends and had fun. Of course there were days she didn't feel like going to school, but for the most part, school was somewhere she wanted to be, and she loved her teacher and classmates. Kindergarten is over, but we're all ready for first grade. (I think)
