Goodbye Running Buddy

June 19, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
At first it was all about running. Amy, a mom of a little boy in Julie's preschool class last year, was trying to get back into running. I was training for my first marathon. She was all about the pace. I was all about the distance. But, as far as running goes, we were a pretty perfect match. Our running relationship began last March, right before the 5-mile Ken Brumbaugh race in Altoona. Despite the cold and the hills, we kept a good pace and sprinted to the finish. After that, we were hooked. We couldn't get enough of running together, running longer and longer distances throughout the steamy summer, and into the chilly fall. Running is what brought us together, but along the way we became great friends. Anyone who has ever had a great running buddy knows what I mean. Running with a compatible partner is just plain therapeutic. There's something about running on the open road that makes you less inhibited and more likely to open up. During our intense running days I probably talked to Amy more than most friends or even family members. We just clicked. We talked and talked about family, friends, our childhoods, our ambitions and beliefs, and just life in general. Unfortunately, after I ran the marathon in October, my love of running fizzled. I needed a little break. But, our bond never severed. Throughout the school year, with our older kids in school, our little boys became great friends, and Amy and I still enjoyed each other, though we weren't pounding the pavement. Tomorrow Amy and her family leave the area, as they prepare for their big move to the Middle East. Her husband, a Major in the Marines, has been stationed in Bahrain for the next two years. It was hard to say goodbye to a great friend today, but we have a date to keep: September 2014--the Rock n' Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach. It's on, Amy!
