Extreme Grandparenting

June 24, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
If my parents told me I was going to spend a week at my grandparents' when I was a kid, I would have been beyond nervous and homesick just thinking about it. I never spent a single night at my grandparents' house (without my parents), and frankly, it's not something I wanted to happen. It's not that I didn't love my grandparents. I really did and I enjoyed spending time with them. But, my relationship with my grandparents on both sides was completely different than the one Julie and Johnny have with their grandparents (on both sides). Last week Julie spent the week with my parents. She and my mom spent the mornings at a vacation bible school, and the afternoons at a local pool. My parents spoiled her with muffins for breakfast (her favorite), dessert after dinner every night and a handful of outfits and sand toys. I know my parents aren't alone in the way they have taken on grandparenthood. While my grandparents never watched me even for a few hours, it's seems like today's grandparents often watch their grandkids on the weekends, or sometimes they are the primary daycare providers. My mother-in-law lives in California, but when she visits us, she loves to watch the kids and play with them. It seems like today's grandparents are more hands-on. Most of my friends' parents are the same way. I'm not sure whether it's the baby boomers trying to grandparent differently from their parents, or whether it's our generation wanting our parents to have closer relationships with our kids. I just know I'm grateful Julie and Johnny have great grandparents who love spending time with them. What was your relationship like with your grandparents? What about the relationship your kids have with your grandparents?
