School lunch in the summer

June 26, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
Want to change up your summer lunch routine? Step away from the peanut butter and jelly. Altoona and Hollidaysburg Area Public Schools offer free lunches for kids in the summer. It's great for pre-kindergarteners to get the swing of the cafeteria, but older kids will love running into friends, and preschoolers and toddlers will feel like big kids. Though I should have taken Julie last summer to get her ready for kindergarten, I guess I never really gave the lunch program much thought. We went for the first time today at Hollidaysburg Junior High School because we just happened to be playing at the playground at Longer Elementary. Lunch at Hollidaysburg is usually between 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On the menu today was chicken nuggets, peas and fruit and the kids were thrilled. Lunch in Altoona is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Altoona Area High School; Juniata, Washington-Jefferson; Irving; Logan; Penn-Lincoln and Wright elementary schools; and Evergreen Manor.
