A great start

August 25, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
The night before first grade Julie was devastated. Tearfully, she told me her fears about not knowing anyone at school and not being able to make new friends. "No one ever likes me when they first meet me. I just want my old friends," Julie sobbed. I held her in my arms, feeling miserable for her. I had to agree that it's not easy moving to a new town and starting school a week later. It didn't seem fair. As we waited in line for the bus the next morning, Julie hung back a bit, held tightly to my hand, and looked a bit terrified. I couldn't stop thinking about her all morning and wondering how she might be handling her first day at a new school. Fastforward to that afternoon and all our fears were relieved. We were invited to an ice cream party at a local park with other parents from her school. Holding hands with two little first grade girls, Julie ran happily over to me. "I'm having so much fun!" she giggled, with sweat dripping down her face. That was confirmation enough for me. Then, I knew she was going to do just fine.
