Friends? Family? Anyone?

August 28, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
If you really want to feel friend-less, try a flat tire in a new town. Saturday started out pretty great. A quick workout, a java chip frap at Starbucks and a funfilled picnic at Julie's new school. A flat tire on your crappy car 7 miles from home will pretty much put a damper on your day. We had parked our Exterra on a side street near Julie's school. Normally, all we needed to do was call roadside service. Of course the special tool needed to remove the Exterra tire was in our house, not the car. Roadside service couldn't help unless we had the little piece. So, there we sat outside the car, sulking, Scott and I silently blaming each other, and trying to find a solution to the crummy situation. Our savior came in the form of a first grade teacher at Julie's school. She lived in the neighborhood by the school, and offered us a ride to our house. What unexpected kindness! Of course it was a tad embarrassing, and our day was still pretty much shot. It also got us thinking about how there's a learning curve with living in a new town. We don't have any friends or family nearby and we really don't know anyone very well yet. I registered Johnny for preschool and I couldn't give the teachers a single name for an emergency contact (other than Scott and me.) We are gradually befriending neighbors and learning our way around, but it will still be a little while before we can call the town our own.
