My MIL, my friend

September 12, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
Today Scott accused me of turning into his mother. I had just finished telling him about a great deal I had scored on a new mattress, followed up by a long speech about "sending out positive vibes." I had to agree. I did sound an awful lot like his mother. After spending 10 days together, what do you expect? But, becoming more like my mother-in-law isn't as bad as you might think. Janice flew in from California and spent a week and a half here in Chicago. Some people gasp when they think of spending that much one on one time with their mother-in-laws. Not me. We really have a blast together, and I think of her as a friend or even a second mother. Spending so much time together during her long visits, we have really gotten close. I feel like I can talk to her honestly, she tells me exactly what she thinks and I value her opinion, even though we might not agree on every single thing. (She swears by Vicks Vaporub, and I hate that stuff!) And, I so much appreciate her presence. She gardens and cleans, and helps me with laundry. She loves playing with the kids and really enjoys being a part of our lives while she's here. Being a long distance grandma isn't easy, so she makes sure she makes the most of her time with us while she's here. I wanted to show her the big city and all the sights, but she was OK just watching Julie's soccer games, eating lunch at Julie's school and peeking in on Johnny's preschool gym class. I know how much it hurts when she has to say goodbye because I feel that same ache, and I know Scott and the kids do too. Pouty-faced Johnny asked me today "When can I go on the airplane with Grandma? I wanted to go. That's no fair." We all miss you Grandma!
