Too cool

October 21, 2012 - Kristy MacKaben
I thought it would start around middle school....maybe 5th grade. But it happened two days ago. I got shunned by my 7 year old. Apparently Julie is officially too cool for me. It was supposed to be a mother/daughter bonding night---a pajamarama party with her Daisy Girl Scouts troop. Julie was OK with me coming until she discovered a couple of her friends would not be accompanied by their mothers. Then, it was "I don't want you there Mommy." What?? I was so not ready for that. I can't say I was completely surprised but I was definitely a little sad. I got my feelings hurt by a 7 year old! So, I left her at the pajamarama and met Scott and Johnny for ice cream. When I was sufficiently cheered by a belly full of peanut butter ice cream, a hug from my 3 year old and a smooch from my hubby, I headed back. I would not be defeated. I was going to hang out with a bunch of first graders and dance to "Call me Maybe" whether Julie liked it or not. I can't say I added much to the party. I blew up a couple balloons and watched as 100 Girl Scouts danced and ran around the stuffy church basement. I pretty much stood on the sidelines and gabbed with a couple other moms, who weren't quite sure what to do with themselves either. At least we were there, and (kind of) part of the night. Julie didn't seem to notice (or care) I was there. But, she did tell me on the way home: "This was the best night ever!" So it begins.....
