A different kind of snow day

March 7, 2013 - Kristy MacKaben
Well we finally had a snow day here in Chicago. It took 12 inches of snow and here we were on Tuesday with the kids off school all day. The sad thing was Johnny was feeling a bit under the weather, so we couldn't really spend the day outside frolicking in the snow. I felt a little guilty that we were stuck inside all day when the rest of the neighborhood kids were building snow forts and zooming down sled riding hills. But, we enjoyed a completely different and wonderful kind of snow day. Many times when the kids have off school for a holiday, we have what we have dubbed "Mommy school." We have our own little school day at home complete with all the subjects, including the specials---art, music, physical education and library. Though I definitely put the kids to work, they actually love it and often ask for a Mommy school day. Being stuck inside all day Tuesday was the perfect opportunity for Mommy school. The theme of course was snow. So, we read books about snow, ate snowman pancakes, painted a snow scene with water colors to go with snow day stories we concoted. We added, subtracted and multiplied snowballs (aka cottonballs), made up songs and dances about snow, and played a roaring game of "snowball fight" using rolled up socks. It was one of those magical days without fights, whines or complaints, and we all entertained ourselves sufficiently without once turning on the TV or reaching for the iPad. The kids didn't set foot in the white stuff, but it was a perfect snow day, if you ask us.
