Help us love the Earth

April 22, 2013 - Kristy MacKaben
We joke in our family about the gigantic carbon footprint we are leaving on the Earth. It's sad, but true. We recycle and hardly ever use plastic bags at the grocery store. We donate a lot of our stuff we no longer want. Instead of eating canned or frozen foods, we eat tons of fresh produce. Obviously we aren't doing enough. For some reason, the mound of trash we create every week is mind boggling. Every Monday is trash day and our trash cans are over-flowing, as well as our recycling bin. Glancing around the neighborhood, we usually have considerably more trash than our neighbors. What the heck are we doing wrong? We truly care about the future of the Earth and we want Julie and Johnny to care too. Like most Americans we have come a long way in our thinking. I remember callously throwing trash out the car window as a kid, and never thinking twice about using plastic grocery bags. But, we are still not doing enough to change the health of our Earth. It's one thing to plant flowers and pick up trash on Earth Day, but it's much more to change your lifestyle and try to really make a difference. Please help us change our ways. What can our family do differently to cut back on the trash we accumulate each week? What are some of the best ways for us to become more green? Suggestions welcome!

What about starting a compost pile that you can later use for your gardens.
